The Senate Armed Services Committee has passed an amendment that would end the ban on abortion care for women in the military who have experienced rape or incest. Several months after its introduction, U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen’s amendment passed out of committee after it was initially blocked by anti-choice senators who kept it from coming to the floor during debate of the 2012 National Defense Authorization Act. Should the amendment successfully make its way through Congress, the lift on the ban would begin in 2013.
A new study in the New England Journal of Medicine found that less than 1% of sexually active women using an intrauterine device (IUD) experienced an unintended pregnancy over the course of the three year study. During that same time frame, nearly 10% of women using pills, patches, or vaginal rings had unplanned pregnancies.
A recent Gallop Poll reveals that the percentage of Americans who identify as Pro-Choice has reached a record low. The poll showed that only 41% of Americans identify as Pro-Choice, down from 49% in 2009. Today, 50% now call themselves pro-life, a near-record amount. However, while these numbers seem to portray an increasingly Anti-Choice majority, a closer look at these results shows that these numbers indicate a much more nuanced understanding of women’s reproductive rights than the initial Gallop results. When asked more specific questions about women’s access to abortion, a mere 20% said that abortion should be illegal in all cases. Additionally, 52% of those polled said abortion should be legal in certain circumstances.
Today Mitt Romney accepted the endorsement of Michele Bachmann – a member of Congress with views far outside of the mainstream when it comes to basic protections for women’s health.
“Minnesotans know firsthand that Michele Bachmann’s views on women’s health are extreme,” said Sarah Stoesz, President of the Planned Parenthood Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota Action Fund. “With his enthusiastic acceptance of Bachmann’s endorsement, where Mitt Romney stands has never been clearer. He’s not a friend to women’s health.”
