Just weeks after the Supreme Court ruled that the Affordable Care Act is constitutional, the House of Representatives voted, once again, to repeal this landmark legislation. The repeal garnered the vote of nearly every GOP congressperson, including Minnesota’s own Cravaack, Bachmann, Kline and Paulsen. This is not the first time a vote like this has taken place. In fact, the GOP lead House has now voted more than thirty times to repeal this legislation.
Our GOP representatives have argued fervently against ACA, citing government overreach and wasteful spending. Despite the fact that ACA will provide live-saving insurance to more than 30 million Americans, Cravaack, Bachmann, Kline and Paulsen continue to fight against legislation that has already been passed and has been deemed constitutional by the United States Supreme Court. Rather than spend time working to find solutions to the problems facing our country, these representatives have chosen to waste valuable time and money on a largely symbolic vote, underscoring their discontent with ACA.
The Affordable Care Act was a victory for all Americans. This historic piece of legislation works to address the moral and fiscal responsibility of providing adequate health care to all people, regardless of their economic circumstances. Every time the GOP votes to repeal ACA, this is what they vote to end:
- Pregnancy, breast cancer, and having been pregnant are no longer pre-existing conditions
- Preventive care services are available without copay
- Birth control is available without copay
- Women can’t be charged more for insurance simply because they’re women
- Kids can stay on their parents’ insurance until they’re 26
- Pre-existing conditions are not a reason to deny someone insurance
Planned Parenthood believes that all people have a right to health care. No person should be forced to make the choice between their economic and medical well-being. When our GOP Representatives voted (for the 31st time) to repeal this law, they showed how out of touch they are with the needs of Minnesotans. All Minnesotans have a right to affordable care, and we should elect representatives who will put the well-being of their constituents above petty political games.
Sign Planned Parenthood’s petition and tell our representatives that it’s time to move on
