McCain Selects Governor Palin as Running Mate

"This selection simply means more of the same from John McCain," said Sarah Stoesz, President, Planned Parenthood Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota Action Fund. "Together, this ticket will work to ensure that the failed policies of the Bush Administration are carried into the White House for a third term," Stoesz said.

Both Palin and McCain have a long history of support for anti-choice policies that jeopardize the health and safety of women. According to an article in the Alaska Journal (3/16/08), when Palin was running for lieutenant governor in 2002, she sent an e-mail to the Alaska Right to Life board saying she was as "pro-life as any candidate can be." She is also on the record stating that she is opposed to abortion even in the case of rape or incest.

"Women will play a pivotal role in this election and so will the Planned Parenthood Action Fund. We are engaged in an aggressive effort to educate voters about Senator McCain's abysmal record on women's health and safety," said Sarah Stoesz, President, Planned Parenthood Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota Action Fund.

Polling by Hart Research shows that Planned Parenthood is a trusted source of  information on health care issues and that 65 percent of women in battleground states like Minnesota view Planned Parenthood positively; an approval rating that puts Planned Parenthood well ahead of other women's advocacy groups as well as both political parties.

The same polling shows that despite his extreme voting record, 51 percent of women voters in battleground states have no idea what John McCain's positions are on women's reproductive health issues.

The Planned Parenthood Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota Action Fund is educating voters in three states about John McCain's anti-women's health care record and zero percent voting record from Planned Parenthood.

In his 25 years in Washington, John McCain has vowed to overturn Roe v. Wade, opposes basic family planning programs and voted against insurance coverage for birth control. "Senator McCain is no moderate. He's voted in opposition to comprehensive sex education,  voted against expansion of birth control coverage to pregnant women on Medicaid and fought against legislation that would provide emergency contraception to rape victims," Stoesz said.

"This election will be critical to the health and safety of women and families. From a Supreme Court that is one vote away from overturning Roe v. Wade to the Global Gag Rule that imposes crippling restrictions on family planning providers overseas, the election of a new President ready, willing and able to carry George Bush's strident anti-women's health care policies into the future will have far-reaching ramifications at home and abroad," said Stoesz.
