ND Group backs anti-choice S.D. measure

It's open season on reproductive rights in South Dakota. Most recently with the decision from the 8th circuit court of appeals.
This ruling meant doctors performing abortions in South Dakota must tell women, "The abortion will terminate the life of a whole, separate, unique, living human being."Besides having only one clinic to serve the state's population, South Dakota has other major restrictions on abortion access, including:
- - 24-hour waiting period
- - Mandatory education about the woman's options
- - Parental notification in the case of a minor
- - Review of a sonogram.
And now thanks to the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals, doctors will be forced to impart ideological beliefs, rather than scientific fact, on women who already know what being pregnant means.
To add insult to serious injury, my state's anti-choice groups are jumping on the bandwagon. North Dakota's Family Alliance hosted the South Dakota "Vote Yes For Life" committee in Bismarck, on June 26. This was about rallying support for the new anti-abortion measure on South Dakota's November ballot.
You may remember that SD attempted a state ban on abortions years ago. That vote went on the public ballot and was defeated by a 12 point margin. This upcoming legislation is similar in its cruel restrictions.
Even though many South Dakotans oppose abortion, I believe the majority would not accept such a rigid ban. People do not want the government making personal, private decisions for them. Remember this is one more step in an effort to overturn Roe. North Dakota's pro-choice community needs to speak out as well. We do not support South Dakota's ban and we stand with those opposing it.
