So in case you still haven't made up your mind about the effectiveness of comprehensive sexual education, the non-partisan National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy released a brand new report once again supporting the notion that comprehensive sex education is more effective then it's counterpart, (more like nemesis), abstinence only education.
RHReality Check has a good summary of the findings:
* Studies of abstinence programs have not produced sufficient evidence to justify their widespread dissemination.
* There exists no strong evidence that any abstinence-only program delays the initiation of sex, hastens the return to abstinence, or reduces the number of sexual partners.
* In contrast, the positive outcomes of comprehensive sexuality education programs included: delaying the initiation of sex, reducing the frequency of sex, reducing the number of sexual partners and increasing condom or contraceptive use.
* Comprehensive sex education programs are well suited for widespread replication and dissemination.
Though this is not anything new (there have been many studies with similar conclusions), it's always nice to see more studies to strengthen the case for comprehensive sex education. Will this be the study that pushes Governor Pawlenty to finally support comp sex ed? I sure hope so! Why don't you give him an extra push and sign this petition?
