So here's the latest scoop from the South Dakota Legislature. Both the House and Senate recently passed a Sonogram Bill that would require that women who seek abortions be offered a chance to view the sonogram-if they choose not to view it-they have to sign a statement verifying that they had been offered and refused to view it.
Also, the Senate Health Committee, at the very last minute and without explanation, cancelled a hearing regarding the Birth Control Protection Act,—which sets up a clear distinction between birth control and abortion. The committee delayed the hearing to February 4th, 10 days later after it was originally scheduled. This type of last minute, unexplained delay is unheard of in the South Dakota legislature, and if you ask me, the whole thing is a little fishy.
Anyway, yesterday I interviewed Kate Looby, Planned Parenthood's South Dakota State Political director, about these two bills. Get the inside scoop by listening below:
Or you can subscribe to our podcast in itunes HERE.
I'd also recommend you take a listen to Wednesday's South Dakota Public Radio Call-In show, in which Kate was featured, that I mention in the podcast. Kate and most of the callers really took it to Roger Hunt, the House Sonogram Bill's author. It was fantastic!
