I hate to start your Friday off with bad news, but last Wednesday, the South Dakota legislature soundly defeated the Birth Control Protection Act, a bill that would have ensured that South Dakota women had access to birth control needed to prevent unintended pregnancies and reduce the need for abortion.  I interviewed Kate Looby, the state director for Planned Parenthood, about how in the legislature's right-mind they could have voted against this bill.

As usual, men pass or defeat laws that give women control over their own bodies.  They all should be ashamed, as well as any woman that goes along with this.  If professionals in the ‘health care’ field don’t believe in a woman’s right to protect herself from unwanted sperm, then they are not true professionals, just hacks in it for the money.

i have tried without success to sign the standupsd.com petition, but it will not let me click on the required fields.
i really believe in choice, in birth control, and fear those who try to control women via their bodies.
can you help me get my petition signed?
kate, keep up the good work.  you are a wonderful advocate for fairness in a crazy world, and i admire your restraint in dealing with some of these idiots.

There are, especially in this day and age, plenty of options for women who “don’t want to put up with” the choice they’ve made themselves: risking a pregnancy. What of adoption? People certainly do have “control over their own bodies” (see prev. post), and they’ve made their choice. However, people should NOT be able to choose to end the life of another. Men don’t have that option. Nor to adults have the right to kill other adults. HOw is it somehow permissible-in the minds of some-to do that with the young?
  Most sincerely,

George,

If men had the ability to conceive and carry to term a pregnancy, I would happily allow you the choice to abort, too. You seem to want that power, would you want the baggage that comes along with it?

it is a false analogy to jump to the topic of abortion in a conversation about birth control.  if abortion is to be discussed in this forum, it should only be to emphasize birth control’s ability to prevent unwanted pregnancies, consequently preventing the need for abortions.  birth control is not abortion.
