Press Release 01.11.08 Planned Parenthood Teen Council Members Take Part in Poverty Tour

On Monday, January 14th, Planned Parenthood Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota (PPMNS) Teen Council members from Duluth will participate in the Expanding Horizons Immersion Experience offered through Churches United in Ministry (CHUM).   This educational opportunity will focus on the impacts of poverty in the twin ports area and how it relates to the issue of teen pregnancy. CHUM has generously waived the fee for the tour.

Studies show that poverty and teen pregnancy are closely linked.

A  study by the National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy showed that poverty is a cause as well as a consequence of early childbearing, with almost one-half of all teenage mothers and over three-quarters of unmarried teen mothers receiving welfare within five years of the birth of their first child. Teen mothers are likely to have a second birth relatively soon - about one-fourth of teenage mothers have a second child within 24 months of the first birth - which can further impede their ability to finish school or keep a job, and to escape poverty, according to the study.

Beginning at 9 a.m., The Teen Council will visit five sites in Duluth, eating breakfast at Damiano Center, then touring The San Marcos Apartments, CHUM Drop-In and the CHUM Food Shelf and ending the day-long tour with a visit to the Life House. The Teen Council Members will then kick off a coat drive to benefit the teens that Life House serves. Anyone who has gently used coats for teens that rely on the Life House can drop them off at the Duluth Planned Parenthood clinic, located at  1001 East Central Entrance, Suite 200.

The tour is scheduled as follows:

9:00a-9:45am  Damiano
9:50a-10:30a  San Marcos Apartments
10:50a-11:20a CHUM Drop-In
11:30a-12:10  Chum Food Shelf
12:15p - 1:05  Life House
