VIDEO: STOP STUPAK!!

November 18, 2009 11:33:20

Alright pro-choicers, this is the real deal here. When the House of Representatives passed its historic health care reform bill, it unfortunately contained an amendment that is antithetical to health care reform.  I am, of course, talking about the Stupak amendment—and if it makes its wayStop Stupak into the final bill, it would effectively ban abortion from public and private insurance plans for millions of American women.  This would amount to millions of women actually losing coverage under health care reform—a possibility that Planned Parenthood and millions of pro-choicers that support women’s access to a safe, legal abortion, cannot accept.

Health care reform is about expanding access to health care—not taking coverage away.

We are doing everything in our power to ensure that the Stupak Amendment does not make it into the final bill. But we can’t do it without your help.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

That a man like Stupak should succeed in reversing women’s right to freedom of
reproductive choice is outrageous and an absolute insult to women’s rights and women’s
intelligence.  He must be stopped!

Stop the Stupak ammendment.  This bill is not about abortion -  it is about the right of every American to enjoy good health and services that promote that good for the individual, for their homes and places of work and for the good of our country.

Women are a key constituency of the Democratic coalition and our self-determination isn’t something you can barter away to seal a deal.  Democrats:  get some integrity and stand up to the right-wing fanatics, whether they’re Republithugs or Republicans lite.

I oppose the STUPID STUPAK amendment

By Lou Franklin on 30/11/2009

I agree with Sandy Gerber. This issue cannot be barter by the Democrats. They have the votes. Create a trigger for a public option and draw the line there. Don’t give up the house trying to add a room.

As an experienced physician (Ob/Gyn), it troubles me greatly to see the hard-won gains of activists of my generation being eroded by fundamentalist “christians”... and frankly, apathy on the part of today’s young people.  Reproductive and family planning rights are clearly guaranteed by various bedrock amendments of the Constitution and the penumbra of the Bill of Rights… and most definetly NOT a political football for right-wing hypocritical bible-thumpers.

The ethics here are simple: if you consider an embryo/fetus a “micro-person” (despite scientific evidence to the contrary) will full legal status (despite no legal foundations) and you are faced with an unwanted pregnancy or malformed fetus, then by all means, continue the pregnancy.  For the rest of us, we demand to make the decision based on the dictates of our conscience… without the interference from evangelical zealots… or pandering politicians… or restrictive governmental legislation into the most basic of all rights, the Right of Privacy!

Cheers to all that work to keep Freedom & Equal Rights alive!
